NetStork-15-2

We present the latest release of our telecommunications network inventory system, NetStork. In version 15.2, we’ve improved integration with online map services and introduced many enhancements to the service model. We’ve also added a new module for managing inventory levels and carrying out equipment replacements. Read on to explore the details of NetStork 15.2!

Support for any scale when using online map layers

In the latest version of NetStork, we’ve removed scale display limitations when using online map layers. Previously, available scales were directly derived from the zoom levels defined in online maps (OpenStreetMap/Google Maps/MapBox/WMS), and any intermediate values were rounded to the nearest defined level. Now, any scale can be used, and the maps automatically adjust to it. This is especially useful when preparing map prints at strictly defined scales.

Benefits:

  • Precise project prints
  • Better data presentation for clients
  • Flexibility when working with maps
NetStork 15.2: Any scale can be used in the system, and maps automatically adjust to it

Reading additional attribute data from WMS services

Some WMS map layers provide extra data in the form of attribute lists for objects displayed on the map (via the GetFeatureInfo request). Now, when analyzing a map with such a layer, you simply need to click on the displayed object, and all related data will be shown. It’s also possible to choose the format in which the data is displayed.

Benefits:

  • More accurate map analysis
  • Fewer inquiries directed to the GIS team
NetStork 15.2: Attribute data from WMS layers is available with a single click

Service extensions

In addition to new features aimed at improving user experience in NetStork, version 15.2 also introduces a range of extensions to existing services.

Service reservation

We’ve added a new column to the Service Status dictionary, which defines whether a given status should be considered reserving or not.

For services marked with a reserving status, route changes are disabled (i.e., no possibility to cross-connect). Additionally, Ethernet and Dark Fiber services reserve the entire fiber, meaning no other service with a reserving status can share it.

Benefits:

  • Assurance that critical configurations remain intact
  • Clear fiber reservation management

Service modeling: BSA/LLU

A new service type – PON (Passive Optical Network) – has been added, along with two new service subtypes based on it: BSA (Bitstream Access) and LLU (Local Loop Unbundling). The core resource for these services is the fiber-optic relation that models the service route in the access loop of the infrastructure provider.

PON-type services also include two specific dictionary attributes:

  • QoS (Quality of Service) – the quality level of the service
  • SLA (Service Level Agreement) – the guaranteed level of service delivery
Benefits:

  • Modeling of popular wholesale services like BSA and LLU

Ability to change the type of an existing service

The Service Type field is no longer read-only, allowing the type of an already created service to be changed. The only requirement is that the service types are compatible – the new type must support the resources already linked to the service.

Benefits:

  • Time savings – no need to recreate the service from scratch

Pole lease service

We’ve introduced a new service called “Pole Lease”, where the resources are utility poles. A single pole can be leased by multiple operators.

Benefits:

  • Transparency and control over shared infrastructure

Warehouse module

NetStork 15.2 introduces a new module for managing warehouse inventory and replacing network equipment. The module allows you to:

  • Add new objects to the warehouse
  • Move network objects into the warehouse
  • Install network objects from the warehouse
  • Replace devices/objects at any level of the hierarchy using a wizard that supports:
    • transferring equipment from the replaced to the new object
    • switching existing port connections from the replaced device to the newly installed one
Benefits:

  • Inventory of equipment data in warehouses
  • Support for installation and replacement processes of network hardware
  • Service continuity for customers

Grouping layers into views

We’ve added the ability to create and save “views” of layer visibility. A view is a saved state of visibility for individual layers and objects. It’s possible to create private views as well as shared ones visible to all system users.

Benefits:

  • Quick toggling between information presented on the map
  • Clarity and convenience in managing complex projects

Exporting network data to ESRI Shapefile format

The latest version of NetStork includes the ability to export data in the ESRI Shapefile (SHP) format. Both spatial data (geometry) and attribute data are exported. The exporter allows users to select:

  • the scope of data to export,
  • the target coordinate system,
  • object types to be exported.

Object types can be selected from a list or retrieved based on the current visibility settings on the map.

Creating logical fields

In the latest version of NetStork, we’ve introduced the ability to create logical fields based on descriptions from a selected context that has been defined using description configurations.

Combined with the ability to create custom descriptive contexts and use descriptive expressions, this enables the creation of virtually any calculated logical fields.

Benefits:

  • Greater control over the informational content in data forms
  • Flexibility to tailor the system to specific operational and project rules

Additional enhancements in NetStork 15.2

  • The Category column of the Service Type dictionary is now a dropdown list. Its values determine what resources a service can contain.
  • A new attribute: Automatic tracking for fiber-optic relations, which decides whether the route of the relation should be updated automatically when connections change. This behavior may not always be desired for certain service types using relations (e.g., Dark Fiber services).
  • Fiber-optic relations can now be created directly from a site using the contextual Add relation operation.
  • Fiber-optic cables and splices have a new dictionary attribute: Purpose.
  • A new dictionary attribute Accessories has been added for poles.
  • Free-standing devices can now also be installed in cabinets and hubs.
  • A number of improvements have been made to the CSV loader.
  • It’s now possible to configure naming patterns for linked document folders, for example, replacing internal IDs with readable object labels. This makes it easier to browse the document repository directly in the file system without launching the application.
